Prince William and Catherine Middleton were finally married on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey as the eyes of the World focused on London with an estimated 2 billion viewers tuning in to watch the ceremony from across the globe. An estimated 1 million well wishers lined the processional route in Central London to view the arrival of family and friends of the couple and dignitaries and Royal family members from home and abroad in a congregation of 1,900.
The groom and his Best Man Prince Harry arrived early at the abbey to soak up the atmosphere of the occasion. Other members of the Royal family followed culminating with the arrival of The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
The crowd’s response reached fever pitch as the bride and her father Michael Middleton travelled the route from the Goring Hotel in a vintage Rolls Royce Phantom. The much anticipated wedding dress was revealed for the first time as the bride stepped out of the car at Westminster Abbey. Sarah Burton at the Alexander McQueen label was confirmed as the designer to have won the commission for the design of the dress and produced what has been described as a classically beautiful but understated creation in ivory silk, satin and hand stitched lace.
Once the ceremony, conducted by the Dean of Westminster and the Archbishop of Canterbury, was over the newlyweds led the carriage procession back to Buckingham Palace escorted by the Household Cavalry. Following the arrival of all of the 650 guests invited to the Palace for a champagne and canapés reception hosted by the Queen, the crowd of well wishers streamed down The Mall to take up position outside Buckingham Palace to witness the customary balcony scene.
The chanting crowd were not disappointed as the Royal couple appeared and rewarded them with not one, but two kisses, before witnessing an RAF flypast featuring Second World War aircraft and modern jets.
A surprise addition to the proceedings occurred as the newly titled Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left Buckingham Palace for Clarence House in the afternoon. With a charming touch of individualism Prince William was at the wheel of his father’s open topped Aston Martin, decorated with balloons and ribbons, as he drove his new bride the short distance along The Mall. A RAF Sea King helicopter from the Prince’s base at RAF Valley in Anglesey hovered overhead.
A party hosted by Prince Charles for 350 of the couple’s close friends followed at Buckingham Palace into the evening.
This was a day to be remembered and you can now sit and watch this whenever you like by ordering the Royal Wedding DVD from Amazon here.
